Liverpool: Jurgen Klopp gives Trent Alexander-Arnold injury update as Liverpool star misses Porto clash

But speaking before the match at the Estadio Do Dragao, Klopp admitted that the 22-year-old’s injury is worse than first feared.

Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Trent Alexander-Arnold has missed Liverpool’s Champions League match against Porto tonight after suffering a groin injury and admits that he’s also a major doubt for Sunday’s match against Manchester City.

The England right-back missed Liverpool’s Premier League win over Crystal Palace two weeks ago, but returned to the starting line-up for the 3-3 draw against Brentford on Saturday.

Despite being seen in action during an open training session on Monday, Alexander-Arnold did not travel with the rest of the team to Portugal with the reason for his absence unknown at the time.

But speaking before the match at the Estadio Do Dragao, Jurgen Klopp admitted that the 22-year-old’s injury is worse than first feared.

‘Unfortunately Trent went in early. It didn’t look serious but in the end it was. He’s out for today and doesn’t look great for the City game [on Sunday],’ he said.

‘He came in from training and we did a further assessment and it looked [more] serious. It’s a muscle, it’s a bit of tightness.

‘We thought he was just a bit tired from the [Brentford] game but it was more and now we have to deal with that.’

Klopp has named 35-year-old James Milner as Alexander-Arnold’s replacement for the game against Porto, as the Reds makes just one change from Saturday’s match.

Speaking on Monday, Klopp said that the 22-year-old would be part of a new leadership group alongside teammates Andrew Robertson and Alisson.

‘We had three captains in Hendo [Jordan Henderson], Milly [James Milner], Virg [Virgil van Dijk] and the players voted for another three,’ he said during his pre-match press conference.

‘So that was won by Trent, Robbo and Alisson Becker.’
